Moss Therapies Counselling

Client led counselling offered in a calm and cosy space within the historic Salts Mill site in Saltaire

What I offer

Professional part incoming - I am an Integrative Counsellor and I use a combination of Person-Centred counselling; a non-judgmental approach that sees you as the expert in your life, even if it's not feeling that way right now - after all, no one knows you more than you know you. I also weave in Transactional Analysis and Internal Family Systems where appropriate. Integrative means that I may use a combination of approaches to suit you based on your needs at that time.

What that actually means is that I'm listening to the way you talk about yourself, the language you use towards yourself and if you're comparing yourself to others in an unhelpful way. Let's work out what is keeping you stuck. I will stay with you as you have the space to navigate your neurodivergence, trauma, loss, anxiety, grief - together we will process without pressure.

You will begin to teach yourself tools to cope when things are hard; the tools belong to you to help you, not make you feel worse about yourself (we do this bit together, don't worry, but this type of counselling doesn't tell you what you should be doing, you get the space to explore what might help based on what you know about you).

About

Hello, I'm Katie

I am a qualified counsellor offering client led counselling from my cosy counselling space pictured above in the historic Salts Mill. I am friendly, and welcoming, my aim is to keep you safe in a professional and ethical way.

I am:

  • Professionally trained in Person-Centred Counselling

  • A professional member of the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP)

I have:

  • An Enhanced DBS

  • Experience working with people of all ages and backgrounds, and my focus is on trauma, anxiety, normalising mental health and the struggles, neurodiversity and helping people figure out who they are, not who others need them to be

  • Lived understanding of ADHD, having been diagnosed as an adult

I do:

  • Make sure to look after myself so that I can be a consistent and safe person for you. I love yoga, nature and walking, but I also love a glass of red wine and watching Below Deck - it's about balance.

What people tend to want to know

1 / What are the costs?

Sessions cost £50 for a 50 minute session, where I will ensure we use the time fully and that we end sessions in a contained way. We will discuss how you would prefer to work towards the end of each session to feel ready to head back into the world. In a 50 minute session, you always decide what we talk about. If you are looking to stay on a certain theme, or work towards a goal; I can help to keep this in mind, but you will be the one in charge here. You decide how frequently you'd like sessions, but weekly is ideal initially to keep up momentum. Sessions are not an hour long, I use the remaining ten minutes to type up notes, send you any agreed resources, make a cup of tea and have a good stretch.

2 / I'm new to counselling - What happens in a session?

Person-Centred counselling and Integrative isn't about me telling you what I think or what I think you should do or try. There are different types of counselling/therapy that can offer this, but at the centre of my approach is finding your way that belongs to you. Often hearing a suggestion you don't feel capable of can harm a relationship we are building, so I prefer to come alongside you and listen to what you feel you need.

3/ How do I know if you're a good fit for me?

The relationship with your counsellor is arguably the most important part of this process. You should feel you can trust your counsellor with anything, without worrying about holding back or pleasing them. Rather than offering a free introductory call, I begin with a full initial session, charged at my usual rate.
This ensures we have a properly held, confidential space to talk through what’s bringing you to therapy, without the limitations of a brief call.

Your gut instinct is a big help here, if you feel safe and held reading this page, that's usually a positive sign we'd be a good fit.

4/ How safe is my neurodivergence with you?

Within the boundaries of counselling, we can find our way of working together safely and without compromising what you need. If you need to get up and walk around the room, if we need the blind rolled all the way down, if we need to use the fidget toys in the room or all of the cushions and the weighted toy, if we need shorter sessions the cost is adjusted, or if you need to sit on the floor, if you don't want eye contact, if you need time to build trust with me - I understand and I don't judge or rush. My aim is to assist you in unmasking as much as you feel safe to do so. My room is also nice and quiet, no sudden or unpredictable noises. and the room is solely mine, so change between sessions is minimised.

5/ Can I bring my dog to my session?

Yes, calm and well-behaved dogs are very welcome and I will send a separate contract to you if you plan on bringing your dog along. The space is cleaned after every dog, but please keep this in mind and let me know if you have allergies.

6/ Why do I feel like a fraud being here and reading this?

I have lost count of the amount of times people have worried they were 'taking someone's space' and that 'other people definitely have it worse than me, I don't even know why I'm here'... mental health is real, and your life matters. There is room for everyone who finds it hard or needs a safe space. You're finding life hard, so let's talk about it and see if you're shaming yourself or talking to yourself in a way you'd never talk to someone you love.
